Description
An account of the resource
The Sea of Galilee, located in northern Israel, is dotted with sites that are traditionally associated with the early life and ministry of Jesus Christ. These holy places were venerated throughout Late Antiquity and many were enshrined with richly decorated chapels and churches. This collection of photographs was taken during fieldwork in Israel over July - August 2013. The aim of this resource is to document, in photographs, the early churches and pilgrimage sites from the area of Galilee.

Description
An account of the resource
Capernaum is an ancient fishing town situated on the northern shores of the Sea of Galilee and the ancient highway, the Via Maris, passed through it. It is identified as the place where Christ settled and as it was referred to as “his own town” (Matthew 9:1). He taught in the synagogue (which was rebuilt in the fifth century), it is the place where He healed the paralysed man and it is also the site of Peter’s house. Today, Capernaum is in ruins. It is possible to see the foundations of the houses and the original synagogue that were all made from a local basalt stone. Many decorated stones from the fifth century synagogue are also dotted around the site.

The Early Christian Architecture of Georgia

An account of the resource
This collection of photographs was initially based upon pictures taken during fieldwork in May-July 2013, with the addition of some material from earlier research trips. The information gathered at this time has been added to and expanded over the course of the project fieldwork, most notably during long periods spent in Georgia in 2016 and 2017. The aim of the resource is to make available a range of images of early Georgian churches in order to study their form, function and architectural evolution, as well as to act as a record of their state of preservation at this particular moment in time. The fashion for rebuilding ecclesiastical monuments post-Communism is currently a serious threat to the architectural heritage of Georgia and these images record sites that are so far untouched as well as others that have already been modified.

The church at Urbnisi is an extremely large C6th basilica. Urbnisi had one of the earliest Christian communities in Georgia which could have been linked to the fact that the town also had a significant Jewish population in antiquity.

Title

Svetiskhoveli
Description
An account of the resource
Svetiskhoveli is the national cathedral of Georgia and translates as the "Life-giving Pillar". The foundational legend of the church says that a Georgian Jew named Elias bought Christ's cloak from the soldier who had drawn lots for it. On his return to Mtskheta he was met by his sister Sidonia who died on embracing the cloak. She was buried holding the cloak and an oak tree grew out of her grave. When St. Nino evangelised Georgia she had the tree cut down and made into seven columns for a new church but the seventh hovered above the earth and displayed miraculous powers before finally being lowered into its place.
The current cathedral dates from the C11th and is built on the foundations of a series of earlier church buildings. It includes a (stone) pillar associated with the miraculous origins of the church and a medieval replica of the Holy Sepulchre within it.
