An account of the resource
These images were taken by John Ingham on a visit to Syria in 1962 and offered to the archive to enable a comparison of how the sites may have deteriorated over the 50 years since they were taken. This record is especially valuable as several of the buildings in this collection have now been destroyed by the so-called Islamic State.

Umayyad Mosque Damascus
Description
An account of the resource
The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus is the earliest Islamic monument still extant after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. As with the Dome of the Rock, the Mosque boasts a large volume of mosaic decoration of the highest quality that is believed to have been carried out by Byzantine artisans given the similarities of the technique and motifs with high-quality Byzantine commissions of the same era. The most notable difference is that there is a complete absence of figural imagery in the Islamic monuments. In the case of the Umayyad Mosque the decoration is particularly intriguing as it depicts a range of landscapes both urban and pastoral, all entirely without living creatures. This has led many commentators to argue that it represents a vision of paradise, with others arguing instead for an idealised representation of Damascus. Whether or not these interpretations are correct, the mosaicists appear familiar with Roman architecture, with porticoed late Roman villas appearing prominently in the decoration, meaning that the mosaics demonstrate a continuity with earlier artistic forms rather than a definitive break with the past. In many ways the decorative scheme is far more conservative than that of the Dome of the Rock, which predates is by over twenty years.

Description
An account of the resource
Palmyra is the Roman name for the oasis city in central Syria that was called Tadmor by the Arabs. It was a major trading centre that reached its apogee in the first centuries AD before entering a decline as Roman-Sasanian hostilities disrupted the ancient trade routes on which the city depended for its prosperity. This decline continued during the Arab period and it was only in the C20th that the settlement expanded again. This was due to several factors; modern transport facilitating relatively easy access for tourists to the site's spectacular ruins and also the fact that a notorious prison for political dissidents was built besides the modern town of Tadmor and a large garrison of Syrian military personnel were accordingly based in the city. In May 2015 the site was overrun by the so-called Islamic State terrorist group and is now critically at risk.

Description
An account of the resource
The Temple of Bel as it appears today dates from the C1st-C2nd AD, but stands on a much older cult site near the date palm grove and Eqfa spring that enabled the foundation of a city in the middle of the Syrian desert. Later on the cella of the temple was adapted for use as a Christian church and faint traces of frescoes are still visible on the interior walls. It was also fortified in the middle ages and there was a village within the walls of the compound until the population was removed by the French authorities during their rule of Syria in the 1920s.

Baalbek
Description
An account of the resource
The extant complex of temples at Baalbek dates from the late first century BCE until the second century CE. The site seems to have been initially dedicated to the Phoenician Triad of Baal-Shamash, Anta and Alyn. This was later Romanised and the local deities were then venerated in the guise of their Roman counterparts Jupiter, Venus and Mercury. The site was considered a provocation to Christians and both Constantine and Theodosius were said to have built basilicas within the temples, but no evidence of Christianity is extant today.
