The Citadel of Zalabiyeh on the Euphrates
Description
An account of the resource
The salvage excavation of the Byzantine/Early Islamic citadel of Zalabiyeh on the River Euphrates in Syria. This project was begun in 2010 as a salvage mission due to the risk to the site posed by the projected construction of a dam as part of a hydro-electricity scheme. The project has been mothballed since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.

The data published here are the records of that first season of fieldwork in 2010. This includes interim site reports for the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums (DGAM) and funding bodies, photographs of the site fortifications and images of the excavations. It also includes all pictures of the small finds that were recorded and stored in the Deir Ez Zor Museum and are now believed destroyed due to the presence of IS in the city as a consequence of the Syrian Civil War.

Aleppo
Description
An account of the resource
Aleppo is the second city of Syria in importance, after the capital Damascus, but is actually the most populous and commercially significant city in the country. Unlike Damascus, which evolved from a series of small settlements, the origins of Aleppo originate with the tell in the centre of the old city which is now dominated by the citadel.

Syria 1962
Description
An account of the resource
These images were taken by John Ingham on a visit to Syria in 1962 and offered to the archive to enable a comparison of how the sites may have deteriorated over the 50 years since they were taken. This record is especially valuable as several of the buildings in this collection have now been destroyed by the so-called Islamic State.

Title
A name given to the resource
Umayyad Mosque Damascus
Description
An account of the resource
The Umayyad Mosque of Damascus is the earliest Islamic monument still extant after the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. As with the Dome of the Rock, the Mosque boasts a large volume of mosaic decoration of the highest quality that is believed to have been carried out by Byzantine artisans given the similarities of the technique and motifs with high-quality Byzantine commissions of the same era. The most notable difference is that there is a complete absence of figural imagery in the Islamic monuments. In the case of the Umayyad Mosque the decoration is particularly intriguing as it depicts a range of landscapes both urban and pastoral, all entirely without living creatures. This has led many commentators to argue that it represents a vision of paradise, with others arguing instead for an idealised representation of Damascus. Whether or not these interpretations are correct, the mosaicists appear familiar with Roman architecture, with porticoed late Roman villas appearing prominently in the decoration, meaning that the mosaics demonstrate a continuity with earlier artistic forms rather than a definitive break with the past. In many ways the decorative scheme is far more conservative than that of the Dome of the Rock, which predates is by over twenty years.

Title
A name given to the resource
Homs and its hinterland
Description
An account of the resource
Homs is the modern name for the ancient Syrian city of Emesa. In the late second century CE a local woman named Julia Domna married Septimus Severus, the future Roman Emperor, and so in the third century several Severan Emperors were born and raised in the city. They were followers of the local cult to the god Elagabal and the most scandalous Emperor of this line was popularly known as Elagabalus.
To the east of the city, south of the road to Palmyra (Tadmor) are a cluster of Christian villages and towns that terminate with Qaryatayn as the most south-easterly settlement in the group to have a Christian presence. The percentages involved in the mix of religions varies from Qaryatayn (about 20% Christian) up until villages like Sadad (almost 100% Christian).

Title
A name given to the resource
Hawwarin
Description
An account of the resource
Hawwarin was known as Evaria in late antiquity and is recorded as being the seat of two bishoprics. It appears to date from the Roman era as there is extensive evidence of Roman spolia in the Byzantine remains in the town. The local population talk of there having been seven basilicas in the settlement and evidence of three of these is still extant, although only one has been excavated thus far - by a Syrian team led by Wedad Khoury of the DGAM. The Roman dressed limestone blocks were carried to the site from some distance away as there are no quarries in the vicinity of the town and the modern dwellings are mud brick or cement. At the centre of the settlement is the mysterious "burj" or tower, which local people believe to have been part of an Umayyad hunting lodge, but which is built with Roman spoil and may well date from the Byzantine period as its nearest equivalent structure is the C6th stone tower at Qasr al-Hayr al-Gharbi. However, unlike the Qasr and neighbouring Khans/Caravanserai this tower has entrances to both the north and south rather than the single entrance that is the norm for such structures.
